Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 21 oz. can apple pie filling
  • 12 teaspoons ground cinnamon or apple pie spice
  • ¼ cup (50 g) light brown sugar

Cinnamon Rolls

  • 2 cans (17.5 oz each) canned cinnamon rolls
  • Reserved icing packets from cinnamon rolls

Other

  • ¼ cup (59 ml) melted butter, plus 1 tablespoon for greasing dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch (23 x 33 cm) casserole dish with about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of melted butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Separate apple pie filling: Pour the entire can of apple pie filling into a mesh strainer over a bowl. Gently press the sauce through the strainer into the bowl to separate the apple sauce from the chunks, allowing some sauce to remain on the apples. Transfer the apple chunks into a separate bowl and cut larger pieces into smaller chunks. Set aside.
  3. Prepare cinnamon rolls: Open both cans of cinnamon rolls and remove the icing packets, reserving them for later use. Cut each cinnamon roll into 4 to 6 pieces, to allow better mixing and integration with the apple filling.
  4. Mix cinnamon rolls with apple sauce and spices: Place the cinnamon roll pieces in a large mixing bowl. Add the light brown sugar, ground cinnamon or apple pie spice, and the strained apple sauce. Gently mix everything together, coating each cinnamon roll piece evenly with the sugar, spices, and apple sauce mixture.
  5. Assemble the casserole: Transfer the coated cinnamon roll pieces and apple sauce mixture into the prepared baking dish. Evenly distribute the reserved apple chunks on top, gently pressing them into the gaps between the cinnamon roll pieces. Drizzle melted butter around the edges of the dish for extra richness.
  6. Bake: Bake the casserole for 45 to 50 minutes, starting to check for doneness around 40 minutes. The casserole is done when the center pieces of cinnamon rolls are no longer doughy and are fluffy inside. If doughy, continue baking for 5 to 10 minutes more and recheck.
  7. Cool and glaze: Allow the casserole to cool on a cooling rack for about 15 minutes. Drizzle the reserved icing from the icing packets over the top before serving to add sweetness and a glossy finish.

Notes

  • You can adjust the quantity of cinnamon or apple pie spice to your taste preference for more or less warmth.
  • Use fresh or homemade apple pie filling for a more natural flavor if desired.
  • Check the center of the casserole for doneness by scooping a small portion to ensure the dough is cooked through to avoid sogginess.
  • This recipe is great for a make-ahead brunch; assemble the night before and bake fresh in the morning.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
