Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Mix to combine evenly.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs until light, then mix in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Make the Batter: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined and the batter is smooth without overmixing.
  5. Bake the Cake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool Cakes: Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Prepare the Frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, beating until fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
  8. Assemble: Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread a layer of frosting over the top. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides evenly.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Slice and serve the cake at room temperature. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • For richer flavor, use buttermilk instead of whole milk.
  • Make sure eggs are at room temperature for better batter consistency.
  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender.
  • Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  • You can add a pinch of espresso powder to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • Store frosted cake in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
