Beef Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Olive oil, for cooking
Assembly
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or any cheese of your preference)
- 4 hoagie rolls
- Prepare the vegetables: Heat a skillet over medium heat with a small amount of olive oil. Add the sliced onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms if using. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized.
- Cook the ground beef: In the same skillet or a separate pan, add a little olive oil if needed and brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Break it apart as it cooks until fully browned and no longer pink, approximately 7-8 minutes.
- Combine and season: Mix the sautéed vegetables into the cooked ground beef. Stir in the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Cook together for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Prepare the rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Optionally, toast the rolls in the oven for 3-5 minutes until lightly crisp.
- Assemble the cheesesteaks: Spoon the beef and vegetable mixture evenly onto each hoagie roll. Top each with a slice of provolone cheese. Place the assembled sandwiches back into the oven for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and serve immediately while hot. Enjoy your homemade ground beef Philly cheesesteak!
Notes
- For a more authentic taste, use thinly sliced ribeye steak instead of ground beef, if preferred.
- Mushrooms are optional but add a nice earthy flavor and texture.
- You can substitute provolone cheese with American cheese or mozzarella as per your preference.
- Use hoagie rolls or any soft sandwich rolls that hold the filling well.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper.
- For a spicier twist, add some crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
