Wonton Taco Cups are a fun and tasty twist on traditional tacos. Ground beef seasoned with taco spices, onions, and diced tomatoes with green chilies is layered between crispy baked wonton wrappers, topped with melted cheddar cheese, creating a portable and flavorful appetizer or meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Mixture

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1/2 Onion, chopped
  • 4 Tbsp Taco Seasoning (or 1 Taco Seasoning Packet)
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 can (10 oz) Diced Tomatoes with Green Chilies

Other Ingredients

  • 2 cups Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 24 Wonton Wrappers
  • Cooking Spray, for greasing muffin tin

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly mist 12 cups of a muffin tin with cooking spray to prevent sticking and set aside.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink. Add the chopped onion and taco seasoning, cooking until the onion softens and the beef is well coated.
  3. Add Tomatoes and Simmer: Stir in the diced tomatoes with green chilies and 1/4 cup water. Allow the mixture to simmer briefly so flavors meld, then remove from heat.
  4. Assemble Wonton Taco Cups – First Layer: Place a wonton wrapper into the bottom of each muffin cup, gently pressing it to fit.
  5. Add Meat Mixture and Cheese: Spoon about half of the meat mixture evenly into the wonton-lined muffin cups. Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheddar cheese over the meat.
  6. Assemble Wonton Taco Cups – Second Layer: Press another wonton wrapper on top of the cheese layer in each muffin cup. Repeat by adding the remaining meat mixture and cheese in layers as before.
  7. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 12-14 minutes, or until the wonton wrappers are golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  8. Cool and Remove: Let the taco cups cool for 5 minutes in the muffin tin. Run a knife around each cup to loosen it, then carefully remove them from the tin.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Use homemade or low-sodium taco seasoning if preferred.
  • Serve with sour cream, guacamole, or salsa for extra flavor.
  • Wonton wrappers crisp up nicely and hold the filling well, making them a great alternative to traditional taco shells.
  • These cups can be prepared ahead and refrigerated before baking—just add a couple extra minutes to baking time if chilled.
